Resumen

This study aimed at assessing the profile of some Brazilian publications in the field of Dentistry. Journal issues published from January 1995 to December 2004 were randomly selected. A total of 255 issues with 1,071 papers were analyzed, considering the following aspects: publication date, institution which originated the publication, number of authors, participation of undergraduate students or Scientific Initiation scholarship holders, dental specialty of the article, financial support, category of the publication, involvement of human beings and ethical aspects. According to the results, most publications were related to the geographical area of influence of the city where the journal is published. Most articles were original, consisting mainly of retrospective epidemiological studies. It was also observed that the editorial requirements of the journals were generally not completely complied with.
