Abstract

The scientific research is increasingly protagonist in the academic area. It exerts a significant influence on professional praxis and training and must be socially relevant, which is the first condition to be ethically justified. Thus, it is of central importance in the election of scientific research themes that will ultimately affect individuals and collectivities. It is a cross - sectional and quantitative paper that aimed to identify ethics and bioethics as research topics in the Brazilian dentistry scientific production, specifically, from a bibliometric analysis of articles presented at the Meetings of the Brazilian Society of Dental Research (SBPqO). There was a consultation of the Meetings Annals from 2004 to 2015 about abstracts containing the fragment "etic" in the text. The included abstracts were classified in thematic categories after the application of exclusion criteria. Only 61 abstracts (0.19% of the total) related to ethics or bioethics, and they were divided into seven categories: 15 in Deontology, 12 in Training, 12 in Research and Publication, 9 in Bioethics, 7 in Bioethics Teaching, 4 in Collective Health and 2 in Deontology Teaching. The abstracts’ floating distribution analysis, during the evaluated period, did not allow observing an increasing tendency. It was possible to conclude that the scientific production of Brazilian dentistry still attributes little value to ethics and bioethics despite their relevance in health problems and power for the formation of ethically competent and socially committed professionals.
