Abstract

Demotivation at university has been associated with unsatisfactory academic performance and inadequate psychological adjustment to life in the university context. Research on motivation as a dependent variable in dentistry education is scarce, and suggests that learning environment plays an important role in fostering motivation, although it is related to the intrinsic and extrinsic motives of each person. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the perception of Dentistry students on factors related to the lack of motivation in the University. Two focus group interviews were conducted with graduating dentists from School of Dentistry (Campus Camaragibe/UPE). The discussions were recorded and transcribed, reproducing the participants perspectives, with subsequent thematic analysis. According to the results, there were preponderance of negative reports, mainly referring to the behavior and method of teaching adopted by some teachers, dissatisfaction with the physical structure and the curricular matrix of the course.
